Delight as Stephen named ‘star nurse’
Clinical Matron, Stephen Mellars was described as “simply the best” as he received a coveted national award.
Stephen, who has worked at Blackpool Victoria Hospital since 1982, was presented with a prestigious Cavell Trust Award after being nominated by Ward Manager Maria Jennings
The Cavell Star Awards, run by Cavell Nurses' Trust, are given to nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care to their patients, colleagues and patients’ families.
Maria, Ward Manager of Ward 6, said: “Stephen is incredibly supportive and encouraging towards all staff, he is a real role model.
“He taught me a lot throughout my career and I am always impressed by the time he takes to spend with patients and families. He really is the best.”
Stephen was presented with his medal, certificate and badge for winning the award by Associate Director of Nursing, Lisa Horkin, at a meeting of matrons and ward managers.
During his 36 years at Blackpool Victoria, Stephen has worked his way up the ranks from staff nurse to clinical matron and has carried out a number of clinical roles.
“I was totally shocked to receive the Cavell Star Award,” Stephen said. “This is a huge honour and I am totally humbled by this recognition.”
